Summertime Trout!I recently enjoyed a trip with Johnie Muller and his two sons Johnie and Justin. It is always fun to take youngsters! There was never a dull moment with 7 year old Justin aboard! If I had that much energy I could get my honey do list caught up!
The fishing has been awesome lately especially when you can get into the surf! On this particular day we fished the gas wells out of Port O’ Conner and fished the pass at Pass Cavalos. With an incoming tide it was pretty good for a couple of hours in the morning. Enough time to get the boys their limit of Trout! Croaker seems to be the choice bait in the surf or when fishing early in the morning with current. As the sun rises however, shrimp is going to be the best, even lures will out fish the croakers at the gas wells. Most of the time I have found that fishing shrimp in a double combo with another lure works the best. When the Trout goes after the shrimp, most times you can catch two fish if you just keep your line tight and don’t reel in too fast. There will always be more than one Trout hanging around so just give them time to pick up on the lure! You will know when the second fish hits and usually the lure will always catch the biggest fish! This rig is built just like a Speck rig or Trout Rig where two lures are used except you will use a Kayle style single hook along with the rubber tail of your choice. I always put the shrimp on the shorter drop. Try it with a curly tail grub or a twin tail grub or any lure that has a lot of tail action and you will have good results! Hopefully you will be able to get in the surf if conditions are right this weekend and get you a limit of Trout like these two boys you see in the picture! Good Luck and Good Catching!
